Anne McCabe Triana
Anne McCabe Triana is the President and CEO of Curo Private Wealth. After working long hours and finding success in the corporate world, she decided to build her own business in 2010. Ever since then, she has cultivated a whole new appreciation for her industry in the way that she has been able to help people achieve their financial goals and live out their retirement days to the fullest.
Throughout her journey, Anne’s biggest challenge was in “finding [her] own voice and finding [her] unique way of convincing clients to do business with [her].” When she first started out, she was told that she had to learn how to play golf because that is where deals were closed. Over time, Anne decided golf was not a passion of hers, which made it a less effective business tool. She discovered that she could use “passion prospecting” to find ways to meet new people and generate business by doing activities of interest to her. For example, she loves to build client events around wine, health, and fitness seminars.
Curo Private Wealth
Curo Private Wealth offers two private services in the financial space: Comprehensive Financial Planning and Investment Management Services. Comprehensive Financial Planning involves taking a snapshot of where clients are from a financial perspective holistically (i.e. how much you keep in an emergency fund, what sort of estate planning documents to have in place) and involves setting financial goals that lead clients to achieve their desired results. Investment Management Services involve the building of portfolios, allocation of money, trading, and reporting.
“The majority of people who come to us are looking to make work optional,” Anne says. “We want to get clients into a position where they are financially free to either make the decision to continue to work, or they can wake up one morning and say, ‘You know what? I’m done, and I’d like to throw in the towel, and I’d like to travel the world,’ or ‘I’d like to volunteer,’ and they know that they have the financial resources to be able to do that.” Curo Private Wealth assists clients in achieving the ability to have that financial flexibility by helping them plan out when they can successfully retire, how much money they will need to have saved, and if their assets are projected to last their entire lives.
Important Aspects of Retirement Planning
Retirement planning is more important now than ever because pensions and Social Security, which used to be 60-70% of an average citizen’s retirement income, are no longer safe to rely on. Pensions are pretty much gone for anyone who doesn’t work for the government, and the future of Social Security has become increasingly questionable. “A lot of retirement is now on our own shoulders,” Anne warns.
People plan out how to make work optional for their entire lives, but when the time comes to retire, it is not always what they expected. After living their entire lives with the structure and intellectual stimulation of a job, it can be difficult to adapt to creating a similarly worthwhile environment on their own. “Their social connections are tied into their jobs, and so when you leave your job, and you no longer have the intellectual stimulation, you don’t have a paycheck coming in, you don’t have your social connections, you know, what are you going to do to keep your brain young and to keep your social connections going?”
Working in the Financial Industry
As a notable businesswoman in the finance industry, Anne has a lot of advice to offer anyone looking to get in themselves. According to Anne, “to be good in this business, you have to have the heart of a social worker and the mind of a capitalist.” The most successful, well-balanced professionals have mastered the art of caring for their clients while simultaneously thinking resourcefully and logically.
Anne’s advice to women who are entering the financial industry is “to be very comfortable in [their] own skin and to quickly realize what a unique value add [they] can bring to the table.” She encourages women to work their natural ability to nurture because clients look for someone who is not just going to sell them on a product or service and be done; they prefer to establish meaningful business relationships with people they can trust.
As far as living the best version of your life goes, Anne says, “I’m a huge believer in surrounding yourself with positive, like-minded people, and ideally people who are even better than you are…They’re doing things in spaces that you admire and that you respect. I once read that you’re an average of the five closest people that surround you…Are they pushing you up or pulling you down? And if they’re pulling you down, maybe it’s time to rethink who is in your inner circle.”
